I’m honored to share that the Dayton Daily News has featured my memoir, Rise Anyway: A Memoir of Survival, Fatherhood, and Becoming.
The article, titled “Book by Xenia author may help others in times of struggle,” represents more than recognition for me. It gives the message behind Rise Anyway another opportunity to reach someone who may be facing a difficult season of life.
Why I Wrote Rise Anyway
I did not write this book because my journey has been easy or because I have everything figured out.
I wrote it because I understand what it feels like to be overwhelmed, afraid, counted out and uncertain about how to keep moving forward.
Rise Anyway is an honest account of survival, mental and physical hardship, fatherhood, responsibility, healing and personal transformation. It explores what happens when life strikes from several directions at once—and what it takes to continue moving when giving up might feel easier.
Although the book tells my story, I believe its message belongs to anyone who has ever struggled to believe that a better chapter was still possible.
What It Means to Rise Anyway
Rising does not mean pretending that pain never happened.
It does not mean denying fear, avoiding responsibility or acting strong every moment of every day.
Sometimes rising means getting out of bed and trying again.
Sometimes it means confronting mistakes and making different choices.
Sometimes it means asking for help, breaking unhealthy patterns or becoming the parent you needed when you were younger.
Sometimes rising simply means deciding that the most difficult chapter of your life will not be the final one.
Progress is not always dramatic. It is often built through small, difficult decisions repeated over time.
That is what Rise Anyway means to me.
More Than Media Recognition
Having my work featured by the Dayton Daily News is meaningful, especially as someone who grew up in Xenia and whose story is closely connected to this community.
But the greatest value of this feature is not seeing my name in the newspaper.
It is knowing that someone may discover the article during a difficult moment, learn about the book and recognize something familiar within my story.
Maybe that person feels alone.
Maybe they are struggling privately while trying to remain strong for their family.
Maybe they have begun to believe that their past, their circumstances or their mistakes have already determined their future.
My hope is that Rise Anyway reminds them that another chapter can still be written.
Healing is still possible.
Growth is still possible.
Purpose is still possible.
