At 31 years old, I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer. My daughter was only a year old at the time.

I never imagined I’d be fighting cancer at such a young age, especially while adjusting to being a father.
I remember being so weak during treatment that even picking up my daughter became difficult. One of my biggest fears was not being around to watch her grow up.
Five years later, I’m grateful to still be here, raising my daughter and sharing my experiences.
I’m excited to share that I was recently featured in Dear Fathers, where I opened up about my cancer diagnosis, fatherhood, mental health, and the experiences that inspired my memoir, Rise Anyway: A Memoir of Survival, Fatherhood, and Becoming.
In the interview, I also discuss some of the challenges I’ve faced raising my daughter, how cancer changed my perspective on life, and what being a good father means to me today.
I’m grateful to Dear Fathers for giving me the opportunity to share my story. Hopefully, my experiences can encourage somebody who may be going through a difficult time of their own.
